Motorsports Puts In Solid Performance At Autum Colours Classic
October
14/08
Dew Motorsports made the trek to Peterborough Ontario for the 16th Annual Autum Colours Classis. A race that has been a large drawing for race teams from all over Ontario and various other places. This weekend proved to be no different with the amount of teams being on hand numbering over 170, including a large field of Limited Late Models, hovering on or above 30. For those who have never been to Autum Colours, this is a must see event which closes off the racing season for most teams and usually brings many of the top teams and track champions from around Ontario. The Dew crew were extra excited as this was the first race the team has been able to get out to this season and the first race for Dave Waite behind the wheel of #25 this season. So in short expectations were set high, but with so many unknows and little or no time with or in the car this season, anything could have happened.
The Dew Motorsports team along with AKA Motorsports arrived early to prep both the #88 Late Model and the #25 Limited Late Model, which saw a combined effort by both teams to bring out the best in both of these cars. The #88 started the weekend off with a solid performance through both qualifying sessions earning them the pole and the roll of the dice. With the invert the #88 started 9th. Meanwhile the picture was much different as the first day of qualifying saw us draw a heat with Stompin Tom, Vic Parsons and some other strong cars who were all eager to get to the front early. A recipe for a pile up, with the #25 taking the brunt of the fallout. That said we managed a 5th place finish and went hard to work for day 2 qualifying. Day 2 saw some major changes to the car setup and a very nervous crew, unsure what would unfold. Not really wanting to have to go through last chance qualifying that would assure an end of field line up spot at best assuming we made the show. On this day the car improved and charged up front for a solid 3rd place finish and dodged any cautions that were brought out. The team spirit now picked up and was much more relaxed as we had guaranteed ourselves a spot in the 16th annual feature race. It was not until Sunday that we realized many strong teams suffered on this day and that we qualified in the top 10. Lady luck shined brighter on this morning, as the roll of the dice managed to pick us up and give us a second row starting position in the 3rd spot. And with a car that was now performing where we had hoped it would at the start of the weekend. The excitment grew more.
The sun shining bright, the afternoon still new, the crew went hard to work with the #88, and Chris put on a solid performance wheeling the #88 car forward to a 6th place finish in a tightly contested field. One race down and one to go, with a very happy team at the results so far. The day dragged on and the sun went down as red flags seemed to be the theme of the day. The Limited Late Model feature fell hours behind and the temperature started dropping fast. We finally made it out onto the track hours behind schedule, eager to get the show rolling, and what a show fans were treated to, with many lead changes, cautions, red flags and on and off the track excitment. A show that some were calling Epic. Dave kept calm early on, after an early incident that put us back to 7th, and he slowly picked off cars finding his way back up into the 3rd place position and with a little help here and ther, some front runners and strong teams behind us, found themselves at the rear or out of the race with mechanical problems. The final laps of the race were chaos as cars battled hard for positions and the red flag flew metres before the finish line. Setting the stage for a green, White, Checker, with Dave and car #25 on Stompin Tom's bumper. A scenario we saw at an invitational last year but with Dave out front and Tom taking the last lap lead away along with the checkers. Could it be a reverse situation this year? Not quite, but Dave ran Tom hard in what was an exciting finish and thrilling end to an extremely short season (1st race of the year). A race that saw many ups and downs for the team, but will be talked about and remembered for a long time to come. Great driving Dave! That was awesome! 2nd place!
Great race Tom! And congrats on the drive for 25! (25 Championships)
Keep tuned for pictures and video's from the weekend. And check out this video uploaded to youtube.
